Cauvery river row: Bengaluru witnessed widespread violence on Monday

As Bengaluru burned on Monday after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Cauvery dispute between the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the city police imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC from 5 pm on Monday. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sent a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart J Jayalalithaa calling for support in preventing escalation of the situation by protecting Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu. He assured protection for Tamils in Karnataka. The attacks occurred even as the Supreme Court heard a plea by Karnataka to modify a September 5 order directing the state to release 15,000 cusecs of water from Cauvery to Tamil Nadu for 10 days. In the midst of the violence, however, rays of hope emerge in the form of people who have come forward to help others in the city with food and transport.
Facebook call for help
A Facebook user Nish Anth posted on a group Put Me In Touch with various numbers and contacts for people stuck in violence in Bengaluru. He offered help in the form of food and transport, promising that they will ensure safety of people who are stranded or need help. He also clarified in the post that this was a volunteer service and that they did not expect any monetary compensation for the same.
Low-cost airlines AirAsia on Monday said passengers of their flights departing from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on September 13 can reschedule their travel at no charge due to logistical difficulties that they may face in getting to the airport following the outbreak of violence over the Cauvery issue. The carrier has made arrangements for rescheduling the passengers travel to any time up to 72 hours at no charge, AirAsia said.
Crowd-sourcing images of vandals
Violence in Bengaluru escalated due to fake forwards on the internet, with the Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara urging people not to give scope to rumours. The Bengaluru city police, however, sought help from the same device to crowd source images of miscreants and vandals who might be responsible for stirring violence. The police said it would take action based on the images and try to catch them. They also said the miscreants will be given stringent punishment.
